A brand new primary school is being built right in the middle of West Craigs by City of Edinburgh Council. The school will be called Maybury Primary.
The school will have capacity for 630 new primary pupils, and 120 nursery places. A brand new health centre serving west Edinburgh is being built within the school ‘hub’. The new primary will act as a feeder for the nearby Craigmount High School, which is only 15 minutes’ walk to the east of West Craigs. Craigmount High has a current capacity of 1,400 pupils, but feasibility is ongoing for a further extension.As part of the wider infrastructure of the development two 5 acre parks will be constructed, one of which will lie directly adjacent to the school. Our ‘Green Corridor’ will also provide connectivity and green space from north to south of the scheme.
Our two brand new 5-acre public parks will have the City of Edinburgh Council approved play equipment and we are also building 3 pocket parks. A significant woodland is being constructed south of Craigs Road. Over 3,825 new trees are being planted throughout the West Craigs project, with the detailed landscaping design by Ironside Farrar, who were also responsible for the Saughton Park refresh.
The new Maybury Primary School has a combined 4m wide cycleway/footway right outside, which links to the wider networks of footways and cycleways within the development. This includes linkage to the ‘Green Corridor’ which runs north-south through West Craigs and then travels north to Maybury Rd / Craigs Rd where a new cycle & pedestrian-friendly crossing is being built, which then leads east to Craigmount High School further along Craigs Road.
In addition to the public parks and woodland, a number of running routes have been created within West Craigs, which are all being signposted. This will include the new Maybury Primary’s Mile a Day Route! All public parks and cycleways/footways have been designed to be fully DDA compliant.
